What is ESTA?

All Visa Waiver Program (VWP) travelers are required to obtain a travel authorisation via the Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA) prior to traveling to the United States (U.S.) under the VWP.

ESTA is accessible online using www.esta-visa.ie and is mandatory for all citizens and eligible nationals of VWP countries.

What are the Visa Waiver Programme participating countries?

Andorra, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brunei, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Monaco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Republic of Malta, San Marino, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom. (As at October 2013)

Who needs to submit an ESTA application?

All nationals or citizens of VWP countries who plan to travel to the U.S. on a plane or cruise ship for temporary business or pleasure for 90 days or less under the VWP will need authorisation via ESTA. If a traveler is planning to transit through the United States en route to another country, an authorisation via ESTA is still required.

How do I apply for ESTA?

To apply for ESTA authorisation, please visit http://www.esta-visa.ie/apply. Answer all required questions, pay the application fee and submit your application for travel authorisation.

I am travelling as part of a family/group. Can I apply for a group of applicants at one time?

This is not possible with the ESTA system, you will need to complete the application form and pay the fee for each person individually.

What information does a traveler need to complete the travel authorisation form?

Each application must contain, in English, biographical data including name, birth date and passport information. The applicant must also answer VWP eligibility questions regarding communicable diseases, arrests and convictions for certain crimes, past history of visa revocation or deportation and other questions. In a group application, each traveler is responsible for the truthfulness and accuracy of his or her own application. The traveler or applicant will also need credit card information to pay the associated application fees in order to complete the ESTA application.

Can someone else apply for me if I don’t have access to the Internet?

Yes, a friend, relative, travel industry professional or another third party may file an application on your behalf. A third party may also pay the application fees on behalf of the traveler or a group of travelers. However, the traveler is responsible for the truthfulness and accuracy of all information submitted on his or her behalf.

How long before I travel must I apply for an ESTA?

Applications may be submitted at any time prior to travel. It is highly recommended that you apply for your ESTA at least 72 hours before travelling to the U.S. though we understand that not all travel is planned in advance and will accommodate applications for last minute or emergency travel.

If you are travelling within 72 hours we suggest you contact us immediately at info@estavisa.org.uk so that we may try to expedite your application as quickly as possible as it may still be possible to gain ESTA approval. Applications are usually completed in around 4 hours but we recommend you factor 72 hours before you travel just in case there are any delays with processing your application.

How long will my ESTA be valid for?

Your ESTA will be valid for a period of two years, or until your passport expires.

What are the possible responses I may receive?

Authorisation Approved: Travel authorised.

Travel Not Authorised: Traveler must obtain a nonimmigrant visa at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate before traveling to the U.S.

Authorisation Pending: ESTA-Visa.ie will update on progress on your application updates up to and within 72 hours to receive a final response. In most cases, a response is provided within 4 hours.

Is there a fee to obtain travel authorisation?

Yes. There is a application fee of £79.99 per ESTA application. This fee includes a $14 fee paid directly to the United States Customs and Border Protection. All payments for ESTA applications must be made online by credit card or debit card.

If I am approved through ESTA to travel to the U.S., does that mean I can enter the country?

Not necessarily. Approval only authorises a traveler to board a plane or ship for travel to the United States without a visa. In all cases, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers make admissibility determinations at ports of entry or preclearance facilities.

I have recently had ESTA authorisation obtained through the ESTA-Visa.ie site but my mobile telephone number/email address has changed, what do I do?

Contact us immediately at info@estavisa.org.uk so that we may retrieve and update your application. There is no fee for this service.
